RBRC and Richard Karn hit a homerun on Battery Check Day 2001
ATLANTA,May 26, 2001 — On April 26 and 27 2001, RBRC and its spokesperson, Richard Karn, commemorated the 3rd annual Battery Check Day with targeted outreach in the midwest.
The theme of Battery Check Day 2001, “Going to Bat for Batteries,” got into the swing of things in a big way. Battery Check Day commenced with a visit to the St. Louis Science Center with local students who recently completed RBRC's Charge Up to Recycle! battery lesson plan. They were quizzed about batteries, electricity and the importance of recycling.
That afternoon, RBRC sponsored a St. Louis Cardinals game (Cardinals vs. the Montreal Expos) at Busch Stadium. Richard Karn threw out the first pitch, high and tight, and shared RBRC's message with more than 40,000 Cardinals fans during a third-inning interview with legendary Cardinals' announcer Jack Buck.
RBRC then brought Battery Check Day to Minneapolis, home of the major league-leading Minnesota Twins and the famous Mall of America. At the Mall of America, Richard Karn and RBRC Executive Vice President Ralph Millard publicly recognized select mall retailers for their participation in the RBRC program.
RBRC sponsored that evenings' game as the Twins took on the Baltimore Orioles. Battery collection sites were set up outside the Metrodome and signs hung throughout the stadium got the RBRC message out to the fans.
Before the game, RBRC had the honor of awarding Minnesota with the first-ever RBRC National Community Leadership Recycling Award – presented to Hennepin County for leading the nation in collecting and recycling rechargeable batteries at the community level.
Richard Karn threw out the first pitch, low and away, and Ralph Millard had the distinction of leading the Countdown to Cooperstown, which honors Twins legend Kirby Puckett as he prepares for his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
To top it all off, Governor Ventura declared April 27, 2001 to be Battery Check Day throughout the state of Minnesota!
