Call2Recycle Partners with Ontario Communities to Increase Battery Recycling

Markham Students Make the Grade during EcoWatch Canada School Battery Retrieval Competition; Hamilton Scores during Daylight Savings Time Collection Drive

TORONTO (March 9, 2011) – Call2Recycle®, North America’s only free battery and cellphone collection program, recently engaged in partnerships with EcoWatch Canada, a non-profit environmental organization, and the City of Hamilton to encourage Hamilton and Markham residents to recycle their used batteries.

In an effort to impact recycling behaviors of younger Ontarians, Call2Recycle has also entered into a partnership with EcoWatch Canada to encourage students in the Town of Markham to recycle batteries during the annual School Battery Retrieval Competition.

Last fall, Call2Recycle partnered with the City of Hamilton to host an “Easy as 1-2-3” collection drive surrounding the end of daylight savings time.  During the campaign, Call2Recycle challenged Hamiltonians to collect 3,000 kilograms of batteries in just over a month, in conjunction with the city’s effort to remind residents to change the batteries in their smoke detectors.  The city more than doubled the goal, collecting 6,300 kilograms of batteries.

On March 6, 2011, Call2Recycle rewarded Hamilton’s battery recycling success by hosting a community celebration with Guy Lafleur and other hockey legends.  The festivities included a barbeque at the Hamilton Fire Hall that collected the most batteries and a hockey game at Copps Coliseum.

“We are pleased to partner with municipalities and community organizations as part of our efforts to ensure that batteries are diverted from landfills and recycled in an appropriate fashion,” said Joe Zenobio, executive director of Call2Recycle Canada.

Call2Recycle collects batteries and cellphones through its network of more than 30,000 communities, retailers and businesses across North America, including more than 2,200 locations in Ontario.  To find a local Call2Recycle collection site or learn more about battery recycling, visit call2recycle.ca.
