Regulatory Commitment
One of Call2Recycle®’s primary commitments as North America’s most comprehensive battery recycling program is to safely and efficiently transport batteries from 30,000 collection sites to our recycling facilities throughout the United States and Canada.
We partnered with major recycling facilities in the U.S. and Canada that are in compliance with applicable environmental regulations. Regulations and permits are in accordance to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Environment Canada and various ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards. These facilities are INMETCO, Xstrata, Newalta and Nova Pb, Inc. For more information, please visit the Recycling Facilities page.
Program Safety Commitment
Call2Recycle collection kits – the bags, boxes and safety instructions that businesses use to collect batteries – must pass rigorous tests for quality, performance and safety before they are delivered to collection sites. Our program collection materials provide step-by-step instructions that stress the importance of safely collecting and transporting used batteries and cell phones.
The materials include collection box guidelines, various instructional posters and plastic bags to prevent metals from contacting in collection box. We further educate our program participants through webinars, newsletters, email alerts and mailing campaigns that address safety issues and explain simple ways to comply with storage and transportation requirements of U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), EPA and Environment Canada.
Social & Environmental Commitment
In 2009, Call2Recycle became the first program of its kind to be recognized as a qualified e-Steward by the Basel Action Network (BAN). The e-Stewards recyclers are a group of leading North American electronics recyclers and asset managers who have been qualified as upholding the highest standard of environmental and social responsibility. What does that really mean to our program participants? That means the batteries and cell phones that are collected and recycled through the Call2Recycle program are not and will never be dumped in landfills, exported to developing countries, or sent to prison labor operations.
