The Home Depot Names The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation Environmental Partner of the Year

Leading DIY retailer honors non-profit and Black& Decker/DeWALT for their commitment to the environment

ATLANTA, November 18, 2002 – The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC), a non-profit organization dedicated to recycling rechargeable batteries, announced today that The Home Depot presented its prestigious “Environmental Partner of the Year” award for 2002 to RBRC and Black & Decker/DeWALT.

A story of industry stewardship

RBRC works with national retailers, businesses and communities to set up convenient drop-off facilities for used rechargeable batteries – those commonly found in portable electronics products including cordless power tools, cellular and cordless phones, hand held mini vacuums and camcorders.

In August 2001, RBRC, Black & Decker/DeWALT and The Home Depot embarked on a partnership that brought RBRC’s battery recycling program into Home Depot stores throughout the U.S. and Canada. With Black&Decker/DeWALT’s assistance, customized battery collection boxes were installed in Home Depot stores and staff was trained on the benefits of recycling rechargeable batteries.

Since the RBRC program launched in Home Depot, over 16 thousand pounds of rechargeable batteries have been collected at Home Depot stores.

“This is a success story that shows what happens when industry stewardship works well,” said Ed Scanlon, President, Commercial Operations, DeWALT. “The RBRC/Home Depot/Black&Decker/ DeWALT partnership brought a major retailer and power tool manufacturer together with a non-profit organization to make a difference for the environment, and the results speak for themselves.”

“Partnering with the largest DIY retailer in the world was a significant addition to the RBRC program, and we couldn’t have made it happen without our strong relationship with B&D/DeWALT,” said Ralph Millard, Executive Vice President, RBRC. “What makes this recognition even more special has been working with The Home Depot, our neighbor in Atlanta, to make a difference both locally and throughout North America.”
