During the week of April 6, 2009, the U.S. Department of Transportation (US DOT) sent letters to hundreds of battery collection locations clarifying the government provisions covering the safe collection, transport and recycling of batteries, and warning about failure to comply with its directives (for a complete text of the letter, see documents below). The letter was intended by DOT to help reinforce the importance of compliance with the handling and transportation procedures Call2Recycle® already has put in place.
Call2Recycle is predicated on complying with all appropriate regulatory bodies to ensure the safe collection and transport of batteries. For more information on this subject, view our online safety video or contact us.
Call2Recycle is currently working closely with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) to ensure the safe collection and recycling of rechargeable batteries. We are currently participating in a Systems Integrity Safety Program (SISP) to review and improve compliance and transportation safety practices among battery recycling. In addition, Call2Recycle has also submitted a request for approval to the DOT that would address the requirements, and provide some accommodations, of CFR 49.
During this period in which we are working together, batteries that are shipped through the Call2Recycle program in accordance with the established guidelines should not be subject to DOT enforcement actions. Call2Recycle will continue working with DOT to maximize our participants' safety efforts in the Call2Recycle program. We will continue to post updates as they become available, so please be sure to frequent this page over the next few weeks.
