Call2Recycle^® is proud to have sponsored an historic Habitat for Humanity home build for a disabled war veteran. In September, we teamed up with Northwest Metro Atlanta Habitat for Humanity, to help Vietnam veteran Victor Alvarado and his wife, Myriam, realize their lifetime dream of owning a home. Call2Recycle volunteer staff spent two days painting and landscaping to get the Acworth, GA home ready for an October move in date. “It’s a dream come true for us to own our own home,” said Alvarado, who is wheelchair bound and happy to soon be living in a one-story that will better accommodate his needs.

In addition to contributing manpower to Habitat, Call2Recycle donated a $15,000 check to the organization, which has built homes for more than 1100 Georgia families to date. Net proceeds from the resale or recycling of cellphones collected by Call2Recycle are donated to annually designated charities, and in 2012 its Habitat for Humanity in the U.S. and Let’s Talk Science in Canada. It is estimated that for every 5,000 cellphones recycled, 11,000 kilowatt hours of energy are saved.

Habitat assesses that 15% of America’s disabled veterans currently live in poverty. The Acworth home is the first in what Habitat hopes will be a series of affordable housing solutions for area veterans. The first Veteran’s build was made possible by a land donation from former U.S. Army Colonel Ashley Ivey and community sponsorships from Call2Recycle, Habitat and other corporate citizens. Habitat for Humanity of NW Metro Atlanta was founded in 1986 and is a non-profit Christian organization dedicated to providing housing for people in need.
