Yolo County Household Hazardous Waste Facility

1.) Tell us about The Yolo County Permanent Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
The Yolo County Permanent Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility is located at the Yolo County Central Landfill in rural Woodland, California. The HHW Facility was built in 2007 to accommodate the growing need for acceptance of hazardous waste. In the eleven years the facility has been operating, it has under gone many changes to increase the types of materials we accept and to put an emphasis on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Yolo County is proud to be a partner with Call2Recycle, the Thermostat Recycling Corporation and Paint Care, all of which close the loop for these hazardous products. We are open to the public for drop-off of hazardous waste every Friday and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. We also offer the service to businesses (CESQG) every Friday by appointment. Our facility provides local residents and businesses with a safe and proper means of disposing of hazardous wastes generated or accumulated by households.
2.) Any unique aspects about your HHW program?
Our HHW program provides free door-to-door pick-up of household hazardous waste for any resident who is 65 years or older or is disabled. We see this as a way to include many members of the community who may otherwise may not be able to drop-off their hazardous wastes for proper disposal. This service is provided every Saturday for residential pick-up by appointment.
3.) Tell us about your partnership with Call2Recycle and its impact on your program.
Call2Recycle has continued to provide the means for a stewardship program for household rechargeable batteries and cellphones for our HHW program. Yolo County has been a partner with Call2Recycle since October of 1999. Supporting projects where producers share in the responsibility for managing products at end-of-life is important. This partnership has developed an environmentally positive and economically sustainable program for our County and we encourage other facilities to do the same.
