National Battery Stewardship Organization Establishes Central U.S. Battery Sorting Hub with Wistron GreenTech

Call2Recycle Augments Battery Sorting Capabilities with Texas-based Facility

ATLANTA (May 28, 2013) – With rechargeable battery use on the rise, Call2Recycle®—the first and largest battery stewardship program in North America—has signed an operational agreement with Wistron GreenTech to increase the sorting capacity for its no-cost battery recycling program.  A wholly owned subsidiary of Wistron Corporation, Wistron GreenTech operates an electronic material recycling facility in McKinney, Texas.

Wistron GreenTech is now the second sorting facility Call2Recycle uses in the U.S., with the other center located outside Pittsburgh, PA. Wistron GreenTech’s central Texas location will help Call2Recycle reduce costs and environmental impact while maximizing operational efficiencies and positioning the organization for future growth.

Discussing the benefits of this recycling relationship, Joseph Hsu, General Manager of Wistron GreenTech stated “As a no-cost battery and cellphone recycling program, Call2Recycle helps preserve the environment by keeping rechargeable batteries out of landfills and the solid waste stream. Wistron GreenTech is a R2/RIOS certified facility providing end-to-end corporate recycling solutions. Working with Call2Recycle not only supports our corporate goals but also demonstrates a greener solution for battery recycling.”

The 209,000 square foot, state-of-the-art processing center is expected to facilitate the recycling of rechargeable batteries and cellphones collected from the western half of the country, estimated to be approximately 20 percent of the batteries Call2Recycle collects in the U.S. In 2012, Call2Recycle diverted 10 million pounds of used batteries from the waste stream.

Wistron has a long, successful history of complying with strict environmental guidelines around the world,” said Steve O’Brien, Managing Director of Operations for Call2Recycle.  “Their focus on sustainability through the long-term coexistence of human, natural and social environments makes Wistron GreenTech a great fit for Call2Recycle and positions us for future growth, as the volume of rechargeable batteries being collected for recycling increases.”
