Battery Recycling Group and Thunder Road Productions Receive Silver Inkwell Award for PSA
ATLANTA, September 11, 2000 – The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC), in conjunction with Thunder Road Productions, has been awarded a Silver Inkwell 2000 Award of Merit by the Washington, DC chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), for the RBRC public service announcement “Gather Up Your Ni-Cds.”
The aim of the “Gather Up Your Ni-Cds” public service announcement is to inform consumers about the recycleable, rechargeable Nickel-Cadmium batteries that may be in unused products around the home. The 30-second TV spot stars Richard Karn, the national spokesperson for RBRC and “Al” from TV's Home Improvement. The PSA was distributed nationally in June 2000 and has also played on the giant AstroVision screen in New York's Times Square. Through national airplay, the PSA has been viewed by over two million people in the U.S..
“We are very pleased with the success of this PSA,” said Ralph Millard, executive vice president of RBRC. “We are also honored that our public education campaign has been recognized as an informative public service.”
BACKGROUND
RBRC is a nonprofit public service organization dedicated to rechargeable battery recycling in the U.S. and Canada. Charge Up to Recycle! is a battery-recycling program funded by more than 300 manufacturers and marketers of portable rechargeable batteries and products. These companies are committed to preserving the environment and pay a fee to place the RBRC Battery Recycling Seal on Ni-Cd batteries and product packaging.
Beginning January 2001, RBRC will expand its existing battery recycling program to include Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion), and Small Sealed Lead Acid (Pb) rechargeable batteries, commonly found in cellular phones, laptop computers, camcorders, and other portable electronic products.
Thunder Road Productions, based in Arlington, Virginia, is an independent creative firm that produces a variety of television, radio and new media programming.
